CHICHI 치 NAILZZZZ: Exploring Biodegradable Material for Dramatic Nails

CHICHI 치 NAILZZZZ explores the potential of bio-based materials as an alternative for temporary dramatic nails used in fashion, editorial, and performance contexts. These highly decorative nail pieces are often worn for only a few hours before becoming waste. Using biodegradable materials such as gelatin and eggshell-derived calcium carbonate, the project develops a bio-composite material capable of creating lightweight sculptural nail forms. Through more than 50 material experiments, the research investigates molding methods, structural stability, shrinkage, and fabrication processes to achieve a balance between aesthetics and functionality. The final outcome presents a Fluid-Futurism aesthetic inspired by organic liquid forms while promoting a more sustainable approach to temporary beauty. After use, the material can be dissolved in hot water, offering an alternative material direction for short-term creative nail applications.
