The One-Person Studio: Delivering Software in the Age of AI
The One-Person Studio presents a framework for solo software development amplified by AI orchestration. Drawing from eight years of UX research experience, this methodology critiques the overconfidence built into AI tools and proposes a disciplined, phase-based approach: Calibrate (test the tool's limits), Research (validate market need), Spec (define requirements with cheap models), Build MVP (focus on hero flow, not feature bloat), Test (confront your blind spots with real users), and Interrogate (challenge every decision). The project yielded 13 products—4 live, 5 in flight, 4 killed—demonstrating that AI functions less as a replacement for teams and more as a motorcycle: a force multiplier that still requires human control and direction. By treating AI as orchestrated agents rather than magic solutions, the framework empowers individual creators to ship meaningful software while retaining strategic oversight and design integrity.
